It is no secret now, Shakira and Antonio de la Rua, the son of the president of Argentina are together.  They have recently had there one year anniversary and by the looks of it, everything looks to be going great.  Antonio de la Rua, a 26 year-old lawyer, frequently takes the 4500 mile trip to be with Shakira, 23, in Miami.  Shakira has also be spotted many times in Buenos Aires, home of Antonio de la Rua.  They were quoted saying in Miami, "When you are in love, there are no frontiers."

     Their relationship has been victim to lies and rumors over the past year.  Some include the rumor that Shakira was pregnant and that they were going to get married in August 2001.  Even though Antonio de la Rua has announced that he is engaged with Shakira, they have not yet set a date.  More recently, it has been said that Shakira and Antonio together bought a two million dollar apartment in an upscale part of Buenos Aires.  This was published in the local newspaper, it turns out that they did in fact look at the apartment but were not interested.

      This romance has captured the attention of all Latinos and magazine covers over the past year, but what do the people think?  The family of the two or happy as ever, even though it didn't start out like that.  Sources say that at first Nadie Ripoll, Shakira's mother, didn't approve of her going out with Antonio.  But now, she no longer disapproves of the relationship.  'Caras' and 'Gente,' the equivalent to the United States' 'GQ,' have featured them on the front pages many times. The people of Argentina have critisized the couple since the beginning.  From talk shows, to editorials, to comics in the paper, they have showed their disapproval of the two.

      But things have changed in the past two months.  The storybook romance has been tampered with by political hardships.  After being charged with treason and turning a cold shoulder to the suffering people of Argentina, Fernando de la Rua has resigned from his position as President of Argentina.  The Rua's have gone from a family of power and wealth to one associated with lies and deceit.  These associations could become potentially dangerous to Shakira's image and career.

      Thus, people close to Shakira are warning her to stay clear of Antonio.  In fact, Emilio Estefan is rumored to have told Shakira to break it off with Antonio before he has negative effects on her career.  'Laundry Service' has been a hit in the US/Europe/Latin America.  So, what will our Goddess of Light decide?  Does she stay with Antonio or dump him to promote her CD that was originally written for him?
